Asylum seeker who subjected 'vulnerable' man to violent sex attack blames 'immorality' of Newcastle

When he came across his victim in the early hours of the morning, Osman approached him and put his hand down his trousers.
He then pulled his own trousers down and pushed the victim's head towards his genitals.
A court heard he then pursued him in a persistent attack for around 20 minutes, during which time he bit him and sent him tumbling into a roadworks ditch.
The victim was left with multiple injuries and was extremely traumatised.
Now Osman, 25, of Gerald Street, Newcastle, who admitted sexual assault, has been locked up for 15 months at Newcastle Crown Court.
The 26-year-old victim, who has "difficulties" and would be classed as vulnerable, the court heard, had been out last September when he was attacked.
While in Rusty's bar, he met a man and they left together and were engaged in some "consensual activity" when stranger Osman approached them.
The other man walked off and the victim followed him but Osman approached him and sexually assaulted him.
"He tried to walk away but felt a bite from behind.
"He screamed and told him he was going home."
Eventually a taxi driver got out and intervened and the ordeal was brought to an end.
The victim had swelling and abrasions above his eye, bruising to his arm and chest, a grazed knee and bite marks to his back and shoulder blade.
Mr Turton said CCTV in the area showed what had happened.
"It shows the sustained and persistent nature of the defendant's conduct towards him, despite the victim's concerted efforts to fend him off and escape," he said.
The prosecutor said Osman has no previous convictions in this country but added: "He is an asylum seeker from Sudan who entered the UK in a lorry with no passport so we can't say if he had any convictions outside this country."
Jamie Adams, for Osman, said: "All of the protagonists seem to be drunk and are out and about in an area which is known to have a reputation but that's not to say it's right, because, of course, it was not for the defendant not to have taken no for an answer.
"His behaviour was more out of clumsy drunken persistence than in any sense violent.
"He is an uneducated man, he was a shepherd in his own country, the Sudan.
"He had never experienced the kind of immorality he experienced in coming here and was evident in this particular area of Newcastle.
"But it was quite wrong to have made his advances when it was evident the man didn't want anything from him.
"He came from Sudan, where homosexuality is still a capital offence, although it's not always enforced. Alcohol is also a pretty serious offence for a Muslim in Sudan.
"This young man had not had any experience of either of those things until he came here. Sadly he started using alcohol.
"He lacked the kind of life experiences we know about in our more civilised community."
Mr Adams, who said Osman had also fallen in the roadworks ditch, added: "He is awaiting a decision as to whether or not he can have asylum because of the experiences he had at home."
Mr Turton pointed out that the activity the victim had been engaging in with the other man was "perfectly lawful and moral" and he had repeatedly told Osman he was not interested.
Sentencing him, Judge Jeremy Freedman told Osman: "The fact you were drunk and that (the victim) was drunk does not provide you with any excuse, albeit it it may explain your behaviour in part.
"It's apparent from the CCTV that he was desperate to get away and becoming very upset.
